Speech Henry A. van der Kwast

Finally, the photographs do not have titles or names.

Many urged, like in work of art, to include titles and names. At this point, as producer of this exposition, I felt that this exposition should allow the pictures to speak for themselves. Viewers should read into the photographs what they see and feel, and not be sidetracked by any precognition of the person in question.

Should in the future a catalogue or picture book of the exposition ever materialize, I can assure you that we will consider providing names.

And finally, the meaning of the exposition is that the Mongui Maduro Library, again, has shown leadership role in what museums and libraries should be concerned with in the future: The accurate reflection of unique historical facts and conditions through the effective use of modern technology.

Next to treating you to the exposition today, and in the following weeks, --you’re going to like this sentence--, we have stored the restored photographs of the exposition, in extremely high resolution, on six CD-ROM disks.

Symbolizing the opening of the exposition, I would like to present these CDs to Ena Dankmeijer, first of all as a present for the anniversary, masha pabien with this milestone.

Secondly, and no less important, as a lasting contribution to the Mongui Maduro Library archives.

And last but not least, as a deep appreciation for allowing me to go this far, I personally had a lot of fun doing it.

Thank you very much
